You forgive

Whether someone asks for it or not. You forgive. Eventually there comes a point where you forgive.

Where you forgive them… despite them not knowing how those words hurt. How those words spoken became a language you told yourself.

Where you forgive even if they can’t remember. Can’t remember the wounds they placed on your heart and bruises they left on your flesh.

You forgive them, even if they don’t understand the fire they started with the matches they lite.

When they’re confused by your distance and confront on your change.

When they know nothing about the pieces you put back together after their destruction. The long nights of lying awake questioning why. Questioning your worth.

You forgive not for the empathy you have or the willingness to let them back in.

You forgive, to allow yourself to change the language within. You forgive, to mend the broken heart and care to the scars. You forgive, so you can hold your boundaries firm for whoever you let in. You forgive, so you can rebuild a foundation that was once set to flames. You forgive so you can acknowledge a worth that no longer needs to be questioned. You forgive not to return to the old but to grow into the new. You forgive, not for them. But so you can be set free.
